Effect of Fluid Administration during the Period of Preoperative Starvation on Surgical Patients

Abstract
In 24 surgical patients, plasma renin activity (PRA) levels were measured in the pre, intra- and postoperative periods respectively and compared with control. All the patients were divided into three groups; the group. I of patients received no fluid, the group If of patients received 5% dextrose and the group f of patients received normal saline solution intravenously in the preoperative period.
The PRA levels during and after surgery were increased more than two-fold in the group of patients receiving no fluid but not increased in the group of patients receiving¢¥ any fluids preoperatively. In our experience, there were no significant differences of PRA levels among the age, sex, operative procedures and duration of surgery.
We concluded that renin secretion during the stress such as starvation and surgery could be modified by infusing the fluid preoperatively, although the increase of PRA level was inevitable.
